According to court documents, Willis entered Summit Malibu in January 2024. Her family later claimed that she arrived at the facility needing close medical attention because of several health issues connected to her condition.

Medical Emergency Changed Everything
Less than 24 hours after paramedics had already visited the facility, Willis was found unconscious.

According to the lawsuit, medical staff and paramedics performed CPR for around 30 to 40 minutes before her heartbeat was restored. Her family claimed that the extended period without enough oxygen caused severe brain damage, resulting in permanent paralysis and serious neurological complications.
Doctors later suggested that Willis may have developed locked-in syndrome, a rare condition where a person remains mentally aware but loses the ability to move most of their body or speak. In many cases, people with this condition can communicate only through small movements, such as eye movements.
Her former boyfriend, Mike Majlak, later shared updates about her condition during an episode of Steve-O’s Wild Ride podcast, describing the challenges she faced after the life-changing medical emergency.

After the medical emergency, Willis’ mother filed a lawsuit against Summit Malibu and its parent company, accusing the facility of failing to provide proper care and ignoring signs that her daughter’s condition was getting worse.
The lawsuit claimed that the rehabilitation center failed to properly monitor her health and provide the medical support she needed.
However, the facility denied responsibility. According to court filings, Summit Malibu argued that Willis had refused certain medical recommendations and that staff had encouraged her to seek additional care.

Attorney James A. Morris Jr. argued that the case was about a major failure in patient care. He claimed that if proper medical procedures had been followed, Willis may have had a better chance of recovering and rebuilding her life.
He further stated that no patient should experience such a serious failure in medical care. According to him, Willis’ condition was not addressed in time, leaving her with life-changing consequences that she may never fully recover from.
The lawsuit claimed that the rehabilitation facility failed in several areas, including creating a safe care environment, closely monitoring Willis’ health, recognising her worsening condition, and providing the proper medical and nursing support she needed.
Her family also alleged that the facility had assured them it could safely care for Willis but failed to provide the level of treatment and supervision required for her situation.
According to the complaint, these alleged failures contributed to the severe physical and neurological injuries that changed Willis’ life permanently.
The $3 Million Settlement Was Approved: She Won $3M… But Lost Everything
After months of legal proceedings, a judge approved a $3 million settlement on Willis’ behalf.
A Santa Monica Superior Court judge approved the agreement because Willis’ current condition reportedly prevents her from making important legal decisions on her own. Before the settlement was finalized, her attorneys also agreed to lower their requested legal fees from $1.2 million to $1 million.
James A. Morris Jr., the attorney representing Willis and her mother, said the settlement should not be seen as a simple legal victory. He explained that while Willis suffered serious injuries, the case involved complex legal challenges and was not an automatic win.
Even though the settlement brought an end to one part of the legal battle, Willis continues to face severe disabilities and a long recovery journey.
Her attorney later shared that there have been small signs of progress, describing her recovery as slow and difficult. He said Willis remains determined to regain as much independence as possible and reduce the burden on those caring for her.
